Being Alive

Artist Statement
In this body of work there is a certain love between forms and a sense of longing. I enjoy when the subjects seem active, even jittery with feelings. Ideally, there’s a certain anxiety expelled through the dashes and strokes outlining things. I’m heavily influenced by printmaking and so often I’ll use tools for painting to mimic this medium. The texture of a ratty old brush, in repeated pounces, gives a graininess seen in lithography. Film has also had a tremendous impact on my work. There’s no doubt I see a painting similar to a still – leaving room for me to imagine the moments leading up to and the moments after.

As for a deeper purpose in my work, I believe it’s about exercising a confidence unique to me and a belief in that specificity. I can be quite confused by life and the world around me, but in the act of painting I find an unshakeable stability.

Biography
Falon Stutzman (b.1984) received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Columbus College of Art and Design in 2009. She currently lives and works in Omaha, NE. Her work often touches on the human condition and a certain wanting from her subjects. Her paintings of people are not meant to represent anyone in particular but are faces molded to depict a vulnerability — an emotion without the burden of likeness. The same can be said for her paintings of inanimate objects. A simple urn is painted as toppled, having a messy life of its own, wanting to be known while not looking much like an urn at all. Falon hopes the paintings feel alive in their own dimension and allow the viewer to see with the same freedom she experienced while painting them.
